Reflections on Blogging
This is my personal reflections on use of blog as a classroom tool of learning and teaching. Blogs and blogging is pretty new to me before this class. I had never joined any blogs either to read or contribute. With this class, I am able to see the usefulness of blogs for my own personal career development, hands-on-experience from more experienced teachers than me. Setting up the blog is even worth mentioning, the ease of set up is very encouraging and an incentive for me to plunge ahead with setting up a blog for my class use now.In my present job I will use the blog to inform the students each week on what core topics we cover and invite their comments. This assignemnt and all the ideas shared has really enriched my knowledge with regards to usefulness and implementation of these Web 2.0 tools in the classroom.

You're right about the setup being fairly easy. However, the implementation can be tricky. Even now, some of our class members (including you) are having trouble with various issues (e.g. browsers vary). In a school setting, I'm thinking that Blogger might NOT be the best tool for use with students. If students have to actually get google accounts, that can be a problem. I'm even thinking of using kidblogs.org next time for this course.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you that blogging seems like an excellent tool to share information with students. I also had never really written a blog before this class. I had read a few and discussed them briefly in other classes, but writing one myself has been a new experience. I think if I kept one that I used with students I might set it up as part of a classroom website. I think I would also open it up as a forum for parents and students as a way to ask questions and contact me outside of school hours. In addition it would allow me to post and share any important or interesting information with parents and students.
Hi Heather, As useful as blogging seems to be, for your classroom you might want to also consider Edmodo. I've seen it demonstrated, but haven't actually used it myself. My understanding is that it is a bit like Facebook for the classroom. I think that would give you the benefits of blogging that you are seeming to enjoy, but more control over the environment with regard to your students. I think it also has tools and resourced geared toward classrooms, e.g. calendars. Hope this helps, Dale
